How To Be a Good Tenant and Neighbor
In order to fully maximize your off campus experience, it is important to be on good terms with both your landlord and your neighbors.
- Being respectful of your landlord will help decrease conflict when issues arise.
- Pay your rent on time. If you are going to be late, contact your landlord to explain the situation and give a date when you can pay.
- Respect the property. Keep your place clean, and avoid damage to the property.
- Keep accurate, organized records of all requests and transactions between you and your landlord.
- Inform the property manager when anything needs to be repaired. It is best to hand deliver a request in writing with a witness, or send it by certified mail. Keep a copy for your records.
- Obey the laws of your neighborhood and apartment complex. Every neighborhood is different; make sure you understand any rules set forth by the homeowner's association in your area. If you fail to comply with the homeowner's association, a lawsuit may be brought against you.
- Do not disturb your neighbors. Excessive noise is a valid reason for eviction.
- Finally, being on good terms with your neighbors can bring unexpected perks like home cooked food, old furniture etc. It is your responsibility and to your benefit to be a good tenant and neighbor.
