Subleasing is a rental agreement between the original
tenant and a new tenant to whom the original tenant rents all or part
of the rental unit. The original tenant continues to be responsible
for paying the rent to the landlord and for other tenant obligations.
Some things to remember
when subleasing:
- Check with your landlord
to make sure subleasing is allowed in your rental agreement.
- Get everything in writing!!
Make sure to fill out a sublease form to ensure the ?subtenant? will
fulfill all tenant responsibilities. If you are subleasing, make sure
to sign and document any agreement made as well.
Subleasing is an option for renting
especially during the summer months. If you have a place rented during
the summer, but you are returning home, you can sublease your rental
to someone who needs a place to stay just for the summer.
Make sure you read your contract before taking any action. Some landlords do not allow subletting. If subletting is allowed, fill out a rental
form on our web site or at our office and have it posted. You can also use other places to post
your rental like the local newspapers (The San Diego Reader or the
Union Tribune), UCSD Guardian.
And/or post flyers around campus.
If you sign a rental agreement that
begins in September and you want to stay for the summer, you can search
through the rentals on the Off Campus Housing website and sublease
a room just for the summer. Most summer sublet listings come in during
the end of the spring quarter and beginning of the summer.
